Underground Cagliari
Journey into the underground cavities of the city of Cagliari which, from the Phoenician era onwards, played a vital role in the city’s history up until the tragic bombings of 1943. The route includes a visit to the crypt of the Holy Sepulchre whose history is said to be intertwined with that of the Knights Templar. The tour continues in the Crypt of Santa Restituta, a magnificent example of late Roman and Byzantine architecture, the resting place of remains dating back to the various dominations as well as tales, superstitions and legends relating to the most authentic district of the city. The tour ends with a visit to the Galleria dei Salesiani, excavated in 800 as a limestone quarry and then repurposed as an anti-aircraft shelter during World War II. Here you can relive the atmosphere of the gallery illuminated by candlelight, just as it would have been in bygone days.
